June 12-Independence Day (Philippines)

Philippine Independence Day celebrates their history, freedom, and culture.

Observed on the 12th of June, this holiday marks the Philippine’s independence from Spain. In 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal confirmed it as a public holiday. The holiday is celebrated by family gatherings and an Independence Day parade.

June 16-Youth Day (South Africa)

This year marks the 46th anniversary of the Soweto protests.

In 1976, a demonstration in Soweto led by high school students clashed with law enforcement, leading to protests across South Africa. June 16th has since been commemorated as Youth Day, which celebrates the Soweto demonstration and shows support to young people across the country.

June 16-Corpus Christi (Brazil)

The feast of Corpus Christi is a public holiday in Brazil, where more Roman Catholics live than in any other country on Earth.

The Feast of Corpus Christi, meaning Body of Christ, is a Catholic holiday celebrated in Brazil. The festival became a holiday during the 13th Century due to the petition of a nun named Juliana of Liege. Many cities celebrate Corpus Christi with a procession.

June 19-Juneteenth (United States)

Juneteenth officially became an observed federal holiday in 2021.

The 19th of June commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. This celebration originated in Galveston, Texas and has been observed sine 1865. The holiday is the anniversary of the proclamation of freedom for enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865.

June 24-Festa Junina/ festas de São João (Brazil)

Adapted from the European Midsummer tradition, the June Festivals of Brazil are a celebration of many things. They celebrate rural life, mark the end of the rainy season, and also commemorate the nativity of St. John the Baptist. Festivities include traditional food and dance.
